Diploma in Chrisitan Communication

The Diploma in Christian Communication is awarded on the successful completion of one year's full-time study. The aims and objectives of the course are:

  • To provide the student with a broad education and training in communication theory.
  • To provide practical training in the areas of television and radio production.
  • To analyse some of the Church's documents on Communication.

Students are trained by media professionals in the management and technical aspects of media production, so that they will carry from the course immediately usable technical skills. In addition, they are introduced to theoretical and practical perspectives, which will equip them with the conceptual tools and the framework of knowledge to develop a critical understanding of the context of media, their operations and their applications.

Admission Requirements:
Students must hold a Leaving Certificate with a minimum of two recognised subjects at Higher Level Grade C3 (or equivalent) and three at Ordinary or Higher Level Grade D3. Selection will be determined by interview and candidates will be encouraged to submit relevant portfolio material, e.g. artwork/creative writing/photography etc.

Programme of Study
The course involves both lectures and project-work and comprises the following
areas:

  • Communication Theory
  • Church and Communication
  • The Political Economy of the Mass Media.

Assessment
The assessment is designed to facilitate learning in both knowledge and skills areas and to provide independent validation of standards achieved appropriate to the course objectives and in line with national and international norms. It normally consists of the following:

  • Continuous project work: each student must successfully complete major projects in the fields of audio and video editing, radio and video production
  • Semester papers: each student must successfully complete two semester papers
  • Semesterised written examinations
