Admission Requirements
NUI Matriculation, or the equivalent. A points system will operate when the
number of applicants exceeds the places available.
Application Procedure: Application for the BTh. is made through the Central Applications Office (CAO). Application forms are available in post-primary schools in Ireland or from:

Applications should be received by the CAO on or before 1 February. Late applications may be accepted up to and including 1 May on payment of an additional fee to the CAO. This degree qualifies for Higher Education grants and for Fee Remission Programmes. Under certain circumstances a student may defer entry for one year.
Mature applicants: Applicants 23 years of age or over on 1 January of the year of intended entry who do not fulfil the normal matriculation requirements may apply for matriculation on the basis of mature years. Before 1 February, mature applicants must:
BTh Add-On Mode: Students holding a Diploma in Theology or equivalent may be admitted to the BTh programmes in Add-On mode. Candidates already holding a primary degree may be considered for the BTh Add-on-Mode at Honours Level. The specific courses to be undertaken in the major and minor subjects will be decided in advance on an individual basis by the Course Director in consultation with the Dean and the Registrar. The minimum duration of these programmes will be one academic year. Permission to extend the duration of studies must be sought expressly from the Faculty of Theology. Assessment will be by examination and course work.
Saint Patrick’s College provides a mentoring system designed as a support for First Year Students as they make their transition to University life. The mentoring system is co-ordinated by the Registrar of the Pontifical University. First Year students will be assigned a member of staff as mentor for the duration of their first year. Students are encouraged to avail of this service, although it is not obligatory. Lists of designated mentors will be provided at the beginning of the academic year. Further information may be had from the Registrar at the Theology Office.

Third year students must submit a ‘Major Essay’ in one of the five core subject areas of study (Systematic Theology, Moral Theology, Sacred Scripture, Liturgy or Canon Law). This essay will be prepared in consultation with a director and in accordance with the Faculty’s guidelines for essay presentation. The length of the essay shall be at the discretion of the director, but it shall not be less than 5,000 words or more than 10,000 words. A list of topics and directors will be published by the end of the first semester. Students are required to register the title of the essay, with the approval of the director, by the last day of class before the Easter vacation of their second year. Students' first choice of director/essay will be honoured when possible, but each director can accept only a limited number of students. The completed essay must be submitted by the final day of lectures before the Easter vacation of their third year. |
