English Language Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Pontifical University who are native speakers of languages other than English must satisfy the University that they will be able to follow courses taught in English. Such applicants should have attained a satisfactory standard in a recognised examination:

UNDERGRADUATE MINIMUM ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language):
213 (computer-based test)
550 (paper-based test)
79 (internet-based test)

6.0 minimum overall score

750 minimum score

ETAPP: C1

National University of Ireland Matriculation:
English at Level 4 or above before 1985 or at Level D or above in or after 1985.

NUI Certificate in English Language Studies
(currently awarded at Shannon College of Hotel Management)

Leaving Certificate:
English at Grade D Ordinary Level or above

University of Dublin (Trinity College)
English Composition (not English Literature) at Pass Level or above

UK Examining bodies:

• GCE O level English at Grade C or above
• GCSE English Language at Grade C or above
• GCSE English Literature at Grade C or above
• CSE Grade 1 Pass in English

The following standard in English Language examinations set by certain Examination Boards - any one of:

1. Assessments and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) C or above.
2. Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR) C or above.
3. Edexcel Foundation C or above.
4. University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) Pass.
5. University of Cambridge ESOL Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) C or above.
6. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test Patterns A and B, with an average score of 6.0 over all components

EU Countries' Matriculation Examination
Matriculation Examinations from European Union Countries where English is presented as a subject and an acceptable level is achieved

Norwegian Certificate of Upper Secondary Education
A score of 4 or higher in English in the First Part

Hong Kong Education Examination Authorities

• Hong Kong Certificate of Education, English Language Syllabus B, Grade C or better
• Hong Kong Examination Authority, Advanced Level Use of English, Grade C or better

Sri Lankan National Certificate in English
Pass level or better

 

POSTGRADUATE MINIMUM ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS:
IELTS: 6.5 minimum overall score
TOEFL (paper-based test): 575
TOEFL (computer-based test): 233
TOEFL (internet-based test): 88
TOIEC: 800
ETAPP: C1+

International and EU students must present evidence of their knowledge of English from the approved list of qualifications before they can be accepted for a place in our undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.
