Dr John O’Keeffe is Director of Sacred Music in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where his activities include preparation and composition of music for the liturgies of the National Seminary at St Patrick's College, together with the teaching and co-ordinating of church music courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Editor of the liturgical music collection Feasts and Seasons he is a member of the Irish Episcopal Advisory Committee on Church Music, currently engaged in preparations relating to the revised musical texts of the forthcoming third edition of the Roman Missal.
- Courses:
- He is co-director of the newly-instituted Masters in Liturgical Music programme at the Pontifical University, which offers specialised training in organ and chant studies, as well as vernacular liturgical composition.
- He is course convenor and teacher on the NUIM Diploma in Church Music, offered in conjunction with the National Centre for Liturgy.
- He is Director of Choral Groups at Maynooth’s National University, where his association goes back to 1987 and the founding of the University’s Chamber Choir under Professor Gerard Gillen.
- He directs the work of Schola Gregoriana Maynooth, a musical collaboration involving students of Maynooth’s National and Pontifical Universities.
- An established organ recitalist, his interest in vernacular church music, together with plainchant and Irish traditional music, are reflected in his 2007 doctoral dissertation, entitled Music and Text in the Mass Settings of Seán and Peadar Ó Riada: Models, Modes and Motifs.
