College Chapel

On Sunday 18th February, with a hint of Spring in the air, the Maynooth Brass and Reed Band, combined with the local St Mary’s Parish Choir presented to an audience of 250 people a festival of brass and choral music.  Given the grand space of the College Chapel and its complimentary acoustics, the full sound of the brass band performing arrangements of Sacred choral works echoed though the cloisters of the College.  Both musical groups took the audience members on a journey of Sacred choral and instrumental music throughout the centuries.  This included an arrangement of ‘Gaudete’ composed in the sixteenth century to works by W.A. Moxart, Holst and the fitting addition of Irish Composer Emphrem Feeley’s ‘A Joy for all the Earth,’ ahead of this year’s World Meeting of Families.

The was the first time both groups were given the opportunity to perform in the College Chapel and judging by the audience’s reaction we are sure it won’t be their last.  Our hearty congratulations go out to the members of the St Mary’s Brass and Reed Band and the St Mary’s Parish Choir, particularly their directors Jon Clifford and Sarah Darlington respectively.  The organist for the evening was sixteen year old student Eoghan O’Callaghan who has just taken up the post of organist to the local Parish choir.
