Sheridan Gilley is the author of the acclaimed biography of Cardinal Newman, Newman and His Age (1990; new edition 2003). Among his other books are The Irish in the Victorian City (1985), The Irish in Britain 1815-1930 (1989) and A History of Religion in Britain (1994). An eminent theologian and historian in the University of Durham, Sheridan Gilley is a regular visitor to Ireland.
