One of the most significant manuscripts in the Russell Libray at Maynooth College is the Accounts Book of Alcalá for the years immediately prior to that college’s closure in 1785. It offers a unique insight into the day-to-day running of the college with valuable information on diet, discipline and domestic matters.
The Accouns Book of Alcalá came to Maynooth when the Royal College of the Irish Nobles in Salamanca closed in 1951. Salamanca had in its turn received archives from the Irish Colleges of Alcalá de Henares and Santiago de Compostela. This valuable collection of over 50,000 documents is one of the centrepieces of the Maynooth College Collection.
The Accounts Book of Alcalá has now been digitised and can be interacted in English or Spanish, and is fully searchable on line, with instant translation for each page. The project is part of an academic collaboration between An Foras Feasa at NUI, Maynooth and the University of Alcalá.
