The recording features McDonagh's settings of psalms, sacred scripture and old Irish prayers which owe much to sean-nós singing, plainchant and contrapuntal sacred vocal music.
Fuaimlaoi is a new and exciting voice in Irish liturgical music. Formed in 2006 by composer Ronan McDonagh, it comprises a group of talented and committed singers and instrumentalists who strive to promote and develop liturgical music that is rooted in the Irish tradition.
A wide variety of instrumental colour is used to bring the settings to life. Four of the settings are in the Irish language, as the group is committed to broadening the repertoire of liturgical music in Irish.
A book entitled "Ancient Promise" containing the musical scores of the settings accompanies the CD to facilitate church choirs wishing to access the new material.
