At a gala launch in the Crolly Room, the editor Jonathan Burroughs presented the first edition, while giving thanks to his mentors and advisory board; Professors Michael Conway, Liam Tracey and Salvador Ryan.

There were ten contributors to this first edition, four of whom read an excerpt from their articles. The editor, and Professor Conway referred to the close visual appearance with the ITQ (Irish Theological Quarterly) and it was acknowledged that the MTJ was the companion rather than the offspring of the ITQ. The hope was expressed that those who publish in the MTJ as students of Maynooth College would contribute to the ITQ at a later time.

The Maynooth Theological Journal (MTJ) will provide a scholarly forum for undergraduate and postgraduate students to share their theological work and research interests. The genesis of this journal originates from the difficulties that students experience in their attempt to bring their academic work to a wider audience. This referred journal will act as a forum for students to grow and flourish in the development of their theological studies.

The MTJ can be purchased in the Theology Office, the University Bookshop and the Post Office.
