Fr Mato has been a tireless champion of the poor in this region for many years.

Macedonia Mission candidates selected

Two 1St Year BA Theology students, Maura Garrihy and Michael Curtin, have been selected to travel with Prof. Salvador Ryan on a charity mission to Macedonia and Kosovo during Reading Week (12-19 March) 2010. They will assist in the work of local priest, Fr Mato Jakovic, and the Jesuit Refugee Service, among the poorest families of the city of Skopje and its environs. In advance of their trip, Maura and Michael will embark on some fund-raising ventures, both on and off campus, with the aim of each raising a minimum of €1,000 (over and above their own airfares), which will go directly to supporting families who are most in need.

Funds raised will be utilised in the following way:

  • the provision of food parcels
  • the purchase of essential medication
  • the funding of life-saving procedures and operations for those unable to afford medical expenses
  • assistance with the payment of rent for families who cannot afford even basic accommodation because of unemployment
  • the purchase of fuel for families for the winter, which in Skopje can reach temperatures of as low as -30°C.

Your support for this venture over the coming weeks would be very much appreciated. Since 1999 (the year of the Kosovo war) a local AIB account has existed to support the work of Fr Mato and the Jesuit Refugee Service. Donations may be made to this account at any time.
