Friends of Genuine Art, Friends of the Church

SATURDAY, 28th NOVEMBER, 2009, 11.00 a.m., Renehan Hall

At the end of Vatican II, on 8 December 1965, messages were sent to various groups, including artists:  poets, literary people, painters, sculptors, architects, musicians, people devoted to theatre and cinema.  The message, read by Cardinal Suenens, began be saying that the Church of the Council declared: if you are friends of genuine art, you are our friends.

The National Centre for Liturgy, in association with the Advisory Committee on Sacred Art and Architecture, is holding a one-day conference for architects and artists, and people who are interested and involved in our places of worship.

Sean Hardie
, chairperson of the Sean Swayne Trust.  He is a writer and former BBC TV director and producer (of News and later, Light Entertainment)

 

Michael Gilroy, priest of Killala diocese who had studied liturgy and environment, including a study of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, the first cathedral to be built in the Third Millennium.Tom Glendon, letter cutter and sculptor


Tom Glendon, letter cutter and sculptor, has specialised in sculpture, letterform, ecclesiastical work and design in stone, wood and bronze.

Holy Family Church, Belfast

 


Eamon Hedderman was architect for the new church of Holy Family parish in Belfast.  The church features sculptured Stations of the Cross and mosaic work by artist, Laura O’Hagan. 

Dr Richard Hurley



Richard Hurley
, architect, has worked with many artists.  In St Mary’s Oratory in Maynooth College –re-ordered by Richard- we have the opportunity to see work by Benedict Tutty, Patrick Pye, Imogen Stuart, Ken Thompson and Kim En-Jong.

 

The conference will take place in Renehan Hall in St Patrick’s College, Maynooth

  • 10.15 a.m.: Registration and coffee
  • 11.00 a.m.: Conference begins
  • 1.00 p.m.: Lunch. 
  • The conference will conclude at 4.00.
