Sigerson Cup in Maynooth

Sigerson Cup comes to Maynooth St Patrick’s College entered the Sigerson Cup competition for the first time in 1972, and had the great joy of claiming the trophy in the 1976 final when they beat UCD 2.05 to 0.9. When NUI Maynooth was founded in 1997, it took over the mantle and is hosting the competition this year.

The cup commemorates Dr George Sigerson, a professor of medicine at UCD who presented the intervarsity trophy in 1911, and UCD won the trophy that year. In the early years, only UCD, UCC and UCG competed. There are now 18 teams from various third level institutions competing. This year 2010 should be the 100th competition, however, in three years, 1918, 1942 and 1967 there was no competition.

UCD has won the competition 32 times, while Saint Patrick's College took the prize only once in 1997, and has not got to a final since. The current holders are the University of Ulster at Jordanstown (UUJ), and were this year's Sigerson Cup favorites until they met Maynooth in Jordanstown on Wednesday 17th February in the quarter-final. Maynooth won, 2-12 to 1-13.

Maynooth will have home advantage when they play DCU in the semi-finals on Friday 26th February. The final will be held in Leixlip GAA-Club on Saturday, 27th February 2010.
