Myles Rearden CM

The College community mourned the sudden death of Fr Myles Rearden CM on Ash Wednesday.

Fr Myles was born in Cork City in 1939, and educated there at Christian Brothers College and later at St. Vincent’s, Castleknock, Dublin. In 1957 he joined the Congregation of the Mission, and was ordained in 1965. He taught philosophy and was engaged in formation in seminaries in Ireland and Nigeria until 1989, having studied at U.C.D., Oxford and Rome. He worked for five years from 1995 to 2000, in Tanzania.

His publications include You are Mine: a view of the spiritual life (Columba 1994) and a translation of Bernard Peyrous’s Guidebook to the Spiritual Life: how should one live with God? (Columba 2004). He was particularly interested in ecumenism, work for social justice, and maintaining the archives of his congregation.

Fr. Myles had served as Spiritual Director here at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth from 1989 to 1995 and again from 2000 to the present day.

His dedication to his role here and to his priestly ministry was clear to all and was exemplified in the manner of his witness throughout his recent illness and his determination to complete his service to those in his care.

The College community held a Vigil of Repose on Wednesday and Thursday. The community mass on Thursday was celebrated by Fr. Myles' fellow Spiritual Director Fr. Laurence Murphy SJ. The presider at Mass in the College Chapel on Friday was Mgr. Connolly.

The College extends its sympathy to Fr. Myles' brother, Ted, sister Susie, his family and his Vincentian community.

May he rest in peace.
